A protest broke out on Monday at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as supporters loyal to the faction of the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the building.
The protesters, chanting solidarity songs, called on the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum, to immediately vacate the secretariat.
Abdulrahman was appointed Acting National Chairman of the PDP last week as the leadership crisis within the party deepened following the suspension of the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for one month.
In a surprising turn of events, the faction loyal to Anyanwu gathered at another location in Abuja, where they declared the suspension of the Damagum-led NWC.
The demonstrators accused Damagum’s leadership of mismanaging the party’s affairs and pledged to reclaim the secretariat for Abdulrahman’s faction.
Security personnel have been stationed around the area to prevent any breach of the peace as the two factions continue their struggle for control of the party’s headquarters.
