Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has raised concerns over possible foreign involvement in Nigeria’s insecurity, alleging that some terrorist groups operating in the country are receiving external support.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Gumi pointed to recent patterns of attacks that, in his view, indicate backing from foreign powers. He stressed that these developments contradict earlier signs of progress in national security.

Gumi highlighted the Abuja–Kaduna highway, which had become safer in recent months, and farmers in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, who had returned to their farmlands after previously abandoning them due to threats. Both, he said, were evidence that security had been improving before the recent spike in violence.

The Islamic cleric called on the Nigerian government to intensify intelligence operations, enhance diplomatic engagement, and investigate all external connections that may be fueling terrorism and insecurity in the country.
