Tear Gas Disrupts Edo Children’s Day Event
Several pupils were hospitalised after tear gas was discharged during a Children’s Day celebration at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
The incident caused panic among students, teachers and parents gathered for the event on Wednesday.
Trouble reportedly started after a disagreement involving students of Ikhogbe Secondary School and some female pupils.
Witnesses said security personnel and bouncers stepped in to control the situation before the confrontation became rowdy inside the crowded stadium.
During the confusion, one of the bouncers allegedly released tear gas, triggering a stampede as people rushed towards the exits.
Many pupils fainted or struggled to breathe, while others received treatment at the venue before being moved to Edo State Specialist Hospital.
The Edo State Government confirmed that the bouncer involved had been arrested and that investigations had begun.
Authorities also urged residents to avoid spreading unverified reports online while assuring the public of their commitment to children’s safety.
