Activist Alleges Cover Up In Delta Killing
Fresh controversy has surrounded the killing of 28-year-old musician Oghenemine “Mine” Ogidi after the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that three inspectors were punished alongside ASP Nuhu Usman, popularly known as Ogbegbe.
The police, however, have not revealed the identities of the officers or their alleged roles in the incident.
Civil rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared the viral video of the shooting in Effurun, Delta State, claimed the three officers were not present when Mine was killed.
He alleged that Usman arrived at the motor park with two civilians identified as “Efe” and “Godwin,” accusing the police of shielding those truly involved.
The controversy deepened after Force spokesperson DCP Anthony Olon Placid referred to the men who accompanied Usman as vigilantes while giving updates on the case.
Gwamnishu argued that the statement indirectly supported claims that civilians joined the operation, alleging that some police teams often use civilians during raids.
A source within the Effurun Area Command defended the arrest of the officers, saying members of Usman’s team were held because they belonged to the same unit.
Gwamnishu, however, insisted the officers should be cleared if found innocent and called on the Nigerian Bar Association and National Assembly to intervene in the matter.
