Airlines Threaten Thursday Shutdown Over Cost
In Nigeria, domestic airlines may halt operations from Thursday, April 30, 2026, over rising aviation fuel prices.
Operators say the cost of Jet A1 has surged sharply, making flights difficult to sustain. The warning follows failed talks with the Federal Government and fuel marketers.
Passengers now face possible travel disruption across the country.
Airline executives said fuel prices have climbed by over 300 per cent since February, pushing costs beyond control. Many operators warned they may ground flights if nothing changes.
The situation has left businesses and travellers uncertain. The industry says it has reached a breaking point after months of rising expenses.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, held meetings with stakeholders in Abuja to resolve the issue.
The government offered a 30 per cent cut in aviation taxes, but airlines said it was not enough.
They insisted the main problem remains the high cost of fuel. Talks ended without a clear agreement.
Operators have now called for urgent action, including tax relief and fuel pricing reforms. They warned that continued pressure could affect jobs and the wider aviation sector.
Industry leaders say airlines are struggling just to cover fuel expenses. With the deadline close, the risk of a shutdown remains high.
