Atiku Pledges For Constitutional Zoning
Atiku Abubakar has said he will support a constitutional change to introduce rotational presidency if elected in 2027.
He made the statement during an interview on Arise Television in Abuja, admitting he once opposed the idea but now sees it as a fair way to share power across regions.
He explained that his position has changed after reflecting on past debates, noting that a structured rotation would reduce tension and create balance in leadership.
He added that he would push the amendment even if it becomes the only reform achieved during his time in office.
The former vice-president also looked back at his disagreement with Alex Ekwueme, who had earlier proposed the idea.
Atiku said he and others blocked the move at the time because they had majority control, a decision he now regrets.
He argued that making zoning part of the constitution would strengthen unity in a diverse country like Nigeria.
He also said the Peoples Democratic Party remains the only major party with zoning clearly written into its structure.
