President Donald Trump of the United States has reiterated his threat to launch a military operation in Nigeria over the killing of Christians, following the Nigerian Presidency’s suggestion of holding a meeting to resolve the matter.
Trump made this known while responding to questions from journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
When asked whether he was considering deploying U.S. troops to Nigeria or launching air strikes, Trump replied, “Could be. I mean, a lot of things. I envisage a lot of things.
“They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. We’re not going to allow that to happen,” he added.
President Trump, in a fiery post shared on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, revealed that he had instructed the Pentagon to develop a possible plan of attack in Nigeria. This came a day after he warned that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Africa’s most populous country.
According to Trump, if Nigeria fails to stop the killings, the United States will strike, and “it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Bwala, spokesperson for Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, said on Sunday that Nigeria remains a strategic ally of the United States in the global effort to combat terrorism.
Bwala noted that Nigeria welcomes U.S. support in its fight against terrorism, provided such assistance respects the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
