NASS Sends State Police Bill To 36 State’ Assemblies
The National Assembly will this week send the constitutional amendment bill on state police to the 36 state Houses of Assembly.
The proposal needs the backing of at least 24 state legislatures before it can be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said the states and governors had already been informed and were expecting the bill.
The amendment aims to allow states to establish their own police while leaving national security matters with the Nigeria Police Force.
The bill includes measures to prevent abuse by state governments and gives the Federal Government powers to intervene when national security or fundamental rights are threatened.
Many governors and state lawmakers have already expressed support for the proposal.
The Senate said the reform is a response to the country’s security challenges rather than politics.
Lawmakers believe the measure could improve policing at the grassroots if it receives the required approval from the states.
